I am getting ready to take a HPT. What are the differences between False Positive, False Negative, Positive and Negative? I hear all about these but really dont know what the false ones mean. Thank you!

False Positive: The HPT gives you a positive result, but unfortunately, you are not pregnant. The positive result may have come from drug interactions, a prior miscarriage, and testing error.

False Negative: The HPT gives you a negative result, but you are actually pregnant. This can be due to testing too early, the hcg hormone not in high enough concentration to be tested, medication interactions, and testing error.

Positive: Congratulations, you are pregnant. No doubt about it.

Negative: Sorry, no such luck this cycle. You are not pregnant.

false negative means that the test says negative (only 1 line) but you are really pregnant they are not all that uncommon when testing early in pregnancy

false positive means that the test says positive (2 lines) but you are not pregnant they are very very rare

so basicly you might want to test more than once to make sure and use the first morning urine it has the highest concentration of HGC the pregnancy hormone that pregnancy tests pick up

Well a false negative would mean you are pregnant, but you may not have enough of the pregnancy hormone (hcg) to be detected yet. Usually this happens if you test to early. False positives are pretty rare. If you are on fertility meds and triggered ovulation with an hcg shot, you may get a false + since it is the same hormone hpt's detect. Another way to get a false + is to read the test after 10 minutes or so. You may see an evaporation line which looks like a +, but actually isn't.

If you test once your period is late and read it in the correct amount of time, your test should be pretty accurate.

A quanitative blood test at the doctor will be the most accuate.

A false negative means that it says negative, but it's really not negative [It could be positive]. A false postive means that the HPT says positive but in fact, it isnt positive [It could be negative]. A positive means your positive and that you are pregnant. And same goes for negative.

False positives are positive tests when you are not pregnant. These are few and far between. False negatives are negative tests when you really are pregnant. These happens when you do not have enough pregnancy hormone for the test to react to. These are much more common. Every woman's body produces this chemical at a different time. Hope this helps.
