Okay the guy is 45 and I am 22. Can my child have a birth defect? Even though they say the baby seems fine, I am worried as I just found out about how the guys sperm if an older male can cause genetic defects. Also the guy is a regular smoker.
Just curious if anyone knows about this
Thanks

No your child will be fine. It has to do with the mothers age not the fathers.
And his smoking won't cause birth defects either, it can cause low sperm count though. So your guy must have strong swimmers.

There is a higher chance of genetic defects such as down's syndrome after the age of 40 for both men and women. I wouldn't get too worried about it though, you can reassure yourself by either chorionic villus sampling ((early) or the multiple marker screen (later).
